The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this charming family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
