Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Acetaminophen Makers Concerning Autism Spectrum Claims

Judicial Action
Ken Paxton, a Trump ally seeking election to the United States Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding potential dangers of acetaminophen

The top legal official in Texas Paxton is taking legal action against the makers of Tylenol, asserting the firms withheld alleged dangers that the medication created to pediatric cognitive development.

The court filing arrives four weeks after Former President Trump promoted an unverified association between using Tylenol - alternatively called paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism in young ones.

Paxton is taking legal action against the pharmaceutical giant, which once produced the medication, the only pain reliever recommended for women during pregnancy, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a declaration, he said they "deceived the public by gaining financially from pain and promoting medication ignoring the risks."

Kenvue states there is no credible evidence tying acetaminophen to autism.

"These companies deceived for years, intentionally threatening countless individuals to boost earnings," the attorney general, a Republican, stated.

The manufacturer commented that it was "very worried by the perpetuation of misinformation on the safety of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the well-being of American women and children."

On its website, the company also mentioned it had "consistently assessed the pertinent research and there is no credible data that demonstrates a proven link between taking acetaminophen and autism."

Organizations acting on behalf of physicians and health professionals concur.

The leading OB-GYN organization has stated paracetamol - the primary component in acetaminophen - is a restricted selection for expectant mothers to treat discomfort and elevated temperature, which can create significant medical dangers if ignored.

"In multiple decades of research on the consumption of paracetamol in gestation, not a single reputable study has conclusively proven that the consumption of acetaminophen in any period of pregnancy results in neurodevelopmental disorders in young ones," the association said.

The lawsuit references recent announcements from the Trump administration in asserting the drug is potentially dangerous.

Recently, Trump caused concern from health experts when he instructed women during pregnancy to "struggle intensely" not to consume acetaminophen when unwell.

Federal regulators then published an announcement that doctors should consider limiting the usage of acetaminophen, while also mentioning that "a causal relationship" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in children has not been proven.

The Health Department head RFK Jr, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had promised in spring to undertake "a massive testing and research effort" that would establish the origin of autism spectrum disorder in a limited time.

But experts warned that identifying a single cause of autism spectrum disorder - considered by experts to be the outcome of a intricate combination of genetic and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism is a form of enduring cognitive variation and impairment that impacts how people perceive and interact with the world, and is identified using medical professional evaluations.

In his court filing, Paxton - aligned with the former president who is campaigning for US Senate - alleges the manufacturer and J&J "willfully ignored and attempted to silence the science" around acetaminophen and autism.

The case seeks to make the corporations "remove any marketing or advertising" that asserts Tylenol is reliable for pregnant women.

This legal action echoes the grievances of a group of guardians of children with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who filed suit against the makers of acetaminophen in 2022.

A federal judge dismissed the legal action, stating research from the plaintiffs' authorities was lacking definitive proof.
