Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
