Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
A major resort island located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to continue the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, including a significant array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.
Broader Portfolio and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
