Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

An freshly coined acronym surfaced a few months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, according to medical experts including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is unusual for physicians to care for a minor who has lost their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that violations are still being committed. Officials disputes these claims, just as it denies everything it is implicated in. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, although at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, we are told, is what international harmony resembles.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that initially championed togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
