An Tale of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
During 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I figured to arrange accommodation upon arrival, however once I got there, a big convention was taking place and all the budget hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the airport – but soon learned the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open around the clock. With no idea what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and found myself drifting near a gaming venue, thinking I could pass those hours in a place that stayed open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the next morning, however, being a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more individuals like that woman.
I must have looked lost because a woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city center and wondered if everything was alright. I explained my situation and immediately she offered I could sleep on the ground at her university residence at the local university – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: one of the stuffed baguettes she had taken home her evening job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and secure to spend the night.
With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she accepted as a young woman letting a man she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. Back then I was in my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to the potential danger. As a dad now, I am astonished she offered that help – yet incredibly thankful.
I never did attending that university, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of kindness. It is my wish the universe has returned her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
