‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s journey from rehabilitation to goals with the Basque club
Thehe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta featured in England, an teenage playing for the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in September 2015, he found the net. The second time he played in British turf, against the Black Cats weeks after, he netted. Another occasion, against the Citizens soon after, well, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in 2017, he scored again. An excellent finish, also. “Truly,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve netted.” So Athletic did what they had to do: he was replaced.
“I was furious,” the forward admits, before breaking into laughter. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the second half: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the usual talk. It’s unclear how true it was, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. I’m fortunate to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At Lezama, the Basque Country, the morning session is ready to commence; post-session, the brief trip to Loiu airport and another trip to the UK, now to play Newcastle in the Champions League on the upcoming match. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for the club, partly because of the pressures of their participation. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and the German side in the continental stage. But, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary surrounded by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in 40 years. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.
The player believed it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. The son of the former Real Sociedad player his father and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, the forward is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the Arsenal manager, the former star and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his top-level debut in that summer, he went through a serious knee problem, being released, a relegation and a call back before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of their lives.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the senior squad but with every stage you advance through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his bow and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.
“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it made me change the way I saw things. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I would go to training and then go home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. Every small aspect: do them.
“At the top level you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact countless occasions. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”
Game time is essential. The striker moved upset in the pandemic season, aged 23, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in that season, he netted three goals in 40 games. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, work, believe, and when eventually the requirement appears for your role, a return could happen. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was about endurance. From top scorer with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
